By Heather Madsen,
One of my favorite childhood family traditions was driving around at night in December and seeing all of the beautiful Christmas lights. There’s something so special about rows of homes twinkling with different colored lights and bright decorations. Although Christmas will be here before you know it, it’s still a little too early for most people to have their decorations up. However you don’t have to wait until December for an incredible light show, because Illuminate is happening, bigger and brighter than ever on November 10th and 11th.
Illuminate is a light art and creative tech festival that celebrates creativity and community. The festival is free to attend and will run from 5pm to 11pm on both days in Liberty Square. The theme this year is Mother Nature in Light, and each artist’s interpretation of the theme will be projected or displayed across the canvas of downtown Salt Lake City.
You can expect to see a dazzling array of pieces including: drone shows where synchronized drones fly 400 feet in the air and create spectacular visuals while avoiding the noise and air pollution that fireworks can cause. There will also be a STEAM lab where all ages are welcome to come learn about how art and technology can be used together, and to participate in hands-on activities. A series of silent films and experimental video from local artists will be playing on the side of the Leonardo via projector. Dreamscapes will be returning to the festival this year, along with several performances on the main stage, and the Night Market where you can buy one of a kind, original pieces.
Come be dazzled by a world of light and design, while supporting local artists and businesses, and connecting with your stunningly creative community. More information can be found at https://illuminatesaltlake.org/.
